The Liturgy

The women, men, and children of Old St. Vincent’s Church make up a "faith community" of Christians who worship together each Sunday in the Roman Catholic tradition. Technically, Old St. Vincent’s is designated a "Chapel of Ease". Most parish functions are carried out only a few blocks away at St. Mary of the Annunciation Cathedral where Baptisms, weddings, confessions, and funerals take place. The "parish" activities also include regular RCIA and CCD classes and a variety of religious education programs for all persons of all ages.

Old St. Vincent’s Church, however, has its own liturgical identity centered, of course, on each week’s celebration of the Eucharist at Sunday Mass. All of the ministries central to this "celebration and sharing of human experiences in God’s honor and praise" are performed and witnessed each week as part of the life cycle of this small church on the bank of the Mississippi River.

First, there is the celebrant --- often the Pastor of St. Mary’s--- always an ordained Catholic priest, one of the parish priests, who carry God’s loving message of salvation to all in attendance. Young mass servers, girls and boys, assist with Mass joined by a small choir and an organist. Music selections simply and tastefully reflect a faith community steeped in years of tradition. Lector’s bare witness to Christ’s Word; Eucharistic Ministers to the Bread and Blood of Life. There are ushers who gather the "gifts" and "gift bearers" who carry the gifts to the altar. There are those who quietly prepare for each Sunday’s celebration and, of course, women and men to greet those who visit, or regularly attend, Old St. Vincent’s.

The liturgy of Old St.Vincent’s Church, in summary, reflects the dignity of the Catholic Tradition and the people who make up this unique community of believers.
